All
our inland properties are situated between Puerto
Lumbreras and Velez Rubio. Both towns are reached
by car in about 15 minutes. Lots of restaurants
and terraces are to be found in both Puerto Lumbreras
and Velez Rubio.
For daily groceries as well as shopping both towns are
very suitable. |
|
|
|
Puerto
Lumbreras is a lively small town at about 80 kilometres from the
city of Murcia. Puerto Lumbreras is as we say down in the valley.
When you leave Puerto Lumbreras to go to your holiday home you will
drive up the first hills of the Sierra del Viento through the Cabezo
de la Jara.
|
|

|
|
In
the Cabeza de la Jara is an amazing natural park where you walk or
bike several routes. The vegetation of this area (and also of the
surroundings of your home) exist mainly ofMediterranean
vegetation, such as pine trees and old olive-trees and almonds. You
will encounter lots of bird of prey like eagles and owls. The region
is particularly suitable for people who like to be surrounded by
nature.
At
about 10 minutes by car you will find the town of Velez Rubio, which
is still a original picturesque Spanish town. Here you can visit
various different monuments like the Iglesia Nuestra Senora de la
Encarnacion (picture next to text).
Every
Saturday the town plays host to an impressive street market where
visitors can purchase fresh, local produce, arts, crafts and gifts,
and real bargains can be found if you are prepared to haggle!
The
larger of the two towns is Velez Rubio, which sits at the foot of a
fantastic "volcano-shaped" mountain, "Cerro
Maimon", which is 1,761 metres at its highest point.
Velez
Rubio consists of winding, narrow, cobbled streets and bleached
white buildings with terracotta roofs.
The
town also has good local amenities such as a medical centre,
supermarkets, and a large public swimming pool and water park,
surrounded by trees, with an adjoining bar and restaurant.
There
are many fiestas throughout the year in which everybody proudly
takes part, including a week for Easter that involves a large
colourful procession through the town. There is also a whole month
of fiesta in August when the carnival moves from town to town.

At
10 minutes from Velez Rubio you will find Velez Blanco. In Velez
Blanco stands a beautiful Moorish Fort from which you can overlook
the mountains and the national park.
In Velez Blanco are also various other historic monuments.
You can for example set out to see the wonderful petro
glyphs, where you can admirer the Indalo, which is now the symbol
for Almeria.
The Indalo man appears on a sheltered rock face in the mountains.
Not far from where the Indalo was found is the Cueva de los Letreros
(the Cave of Symbols), a UNESCO world heritage site, where drawings
of witch doctors, warriors and game indicate that man has called
this land home since prehistory.
In
Velez Blanco you find part of the national natural park Las Marias.
Here many beautiful walks are set out! We especially love the
mirror-points where you can see amazing views.

The
54,000-acre large natural park Sierra Maria-Los Velez, a natural
park since 1987, holds many surprises for the visitor, including a
rural lifestyle long disappeared from other parts of Spain.
Here,
goatherders wander the hills as they guard their flocks, families
bake their daily bread in the communal oven, and day-to-day business
is carried on at an unhurried pace. The nearby park, with its
landscape of mountains and pine forests, makes for excellent walking
and off-trail biking expeditions (see our activities page), aside
from harbouring a unique wildlife.
This
is one of the few places in southern Spain where you can spot
squirrels. It is also home to the threatened European tortoise
(testudo graeca), which is now being bred at a special centre in the
park to increase its numbers.
The
local countryside also boasts a large variety of wildlife including
foxes, wild boar, mountain cat and badgers, so if you are looking
for walking holidays in Spain you have come to the right place.
Golden
eagles, snake eagles and eagle owls soar in the skies above the
house and other bird-life includes kestrel, vulgar, crossbill,
linnet, thekla lark, wood lark, and partridge, which makes for
excellent walks and days out in stunning, dramatic scenery.
The
area is home to the impressive Griffon vulture in an ambitious plan
to repopulate the sierras with these high-flying birds.
Lorca
Lorca
is situated at 10 minutes by car northeast of Puerto Lumbreras and
is known for his baroque architecture. There are numerous beautiful
churches, like the San Patricio, made in the 16th century, the El
Carmen from the 18de century in the style of rococo and the Santa
Maria.
Big
parts of the Moorish fort are still standing and the Lorca Castle is
definitely worth a visit.

Beaches:
At
about 45 minutes
from La Zorra lies Aquilas, which should be the nearest beach if you
look at the map.
|
|
|
|
However,
because the route to Vera drives way faster you will
find yourself even quicker on the beaches of Vera Playa.
An
option is to combine a day at the beach with a visit to
the towns of Mojacar or Garrucha.
|
|

|
|
|
|
|
In
Vera you will also find a large waterslide park
Kids will have a blast here. After four p.m. you get a
discount of 40%.
The
little town of Garrucha was originally a fishing village and still
has a market that is well worth visiting.
At
Friday morning you will find the week markets in the streets of the
old town of Garrucha. In summer you can visit the charming evening
market on the boulevard. In august you can visit the fair on the
pier, which is open till very late in the evening.
|
|
|
|
|

|
|
|
|
|
You
will also find lots of restaurants, especially fish-restaurants!
A
few miles along the coast you will find Mojacar strip with many
restaurants, shops and hotel accommodation. Recently
Mojacar gained a golf course.
Some
kilometres inland from Mojacar strip you will find the old,
picturesque Mojacar village situated on a hilltop.
You
will enjoy your drink a lot more on the terraces here overlooking
the coastline, preferably in the sunset. On Sunday mornings there is
a lovely flee market and on Wednesday mornings is the week market at
the soccer fields .
For
daytrips you can visit for example Murcia, Granada with its
beautiful impressive Alhambra, old
Cartagena with its old roman remains or Almeria.
People
with a love for nature can visit various national nature parks, like
the national park Cabo de Gata.
